Internal markets can improve knowledge exchange, forecasting, innovation, and productivity within the firm. Despite their widespread popularity, however, the strategies to implement and manage markets inside organizational boundaries are not well understood. In her presentation, Dr. Hind will provides a design framework for developing knowledge markets inside firms; it provides a stage model or ‘life cycle’ of internal market development, and explores critical issues at each stage. Our framework proceeds from an analysis of more than three dozen firm implementations, and builds on three economic theories: price theory, monetary theory, and two-sided network theory. For each stage of implementation, the framework outlines the challenges faced by firms studied and identifies solutions to make knowledge markets work. The resulting blueprint adds rigor to the difficult tasks of measuring, valuing, and stimulating the production of information.

Dr. Hind Benbya is an Associate Professor of Information Technology Management at GSCM-Montpellier Business School, France. Her research consists in developing frameworks and tools for implementing and evaluating complex IT systems (i.e., Knowledge Management Systems, Internal Knowledge Markets and Co-Creation Communities). Her publications appeared or are forthcoming in journals such as MIT Sloan Management Review, Information Technology and People, Communications of the AIS, Journal of Information Technology, among others. She has published: Knowledge Management Systems Implementation: Lessons from the Silicon Valley and co-edited Successful OSS Project Design and Implementation.

nas_borderHow to manage co-opetitive innovation between firms and communities with modular design?

Co-opetitive innovation policies have become a strong alternative strategy for companies to renew and sustain their competitive advantage. Big players from the IT industry like IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Sun Microsystems have adopted this path to develop new products or sustain the evolution of existing ones (i.e., Firefox, Linux, Apache, Sugar CRM...). Of course the concept of co-opetition – simultaneous relationship combining cooperation and competition[1]- used to innovate by developing new products or services (Debian project, KVM[2],) or to share a heavy investment (Suse, Android) is not new, but managers have struggled with how to integrate different work methods and techniques from external firms and open source communities into their projects. Executives and community leaders need consequently to figure out what is the best way to open up their projects to these external participants to innovate. One of the conditions requires from companies and open source communities to provide their projects with enough modularity in the design (modular design) to fully benefit from outside contributors.
